MLS Residency 1 – Law, the Legal System, and Society
Law, the Legal System, and Society is an immersive, experiential residency course through which students explore the intersections of law, public policy, social responsibility, justice, and morality. Students will engage with case studies, critical discussions, issues, and problem solving through exercises, field trips, and speakers. Through critical consideration of legal history, law and policy, culture and religion, economics, politics, and other critical topics, students explore how law and access to the justice system can promote justice, development, and resources in communities.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Recognize the legal issue(s) and possible public policy issues in the hypotheticals presented to them.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the relationship between the law, legal system, society, and communities.
- Comprehend and compare differences between the processes of politics, law, and culture.
- Demonstrate ability to engage in critical, objective evaluation of social and legal issues.
